A letter from brother Jerry Kindred,
written in christmas eve, 2013.
Hello All,
the holiday cliches seem empty today, but i feel the need to reach out, nevertheless. so i'm reaching. . . the deb's devotee in our family (referring to Eugene Debs) was the father of our father Art. he wasn't a miner. he worked for the railroad. they may have had goggles for that work. his name was Lawrence. i suspect that i am the only brother to have any contact with the Lyons' grandparents, because they lost their house in 1938. i am pretty sure Lawrence was dead by then, but i do remember visits to the Lyons house. I remember three main things.
Grandma Mary had cats and the smell was something else to behold to my young (born 1934) sensitive nature. Grandpa smoked pipes. another odor that tends to pervade all.
last and not least...

the living room political discussion. there were many Grandma Mary relatives from Lyons. the only thing i remember specifically is the discussion about Roosevelt. remember, this was in his first term and there was at least one deb's voter in the room.
love to all.
i hope to do more including photos of clear lake at convention sds convention time.

Thanks for your input to the Steve Blog. Learning about him through one another's stories is something we can continue to enjoy, beyond his passing. May his vision, work and passions live on through our paths, and be invigorated by our stories, sharings, and dialogues.
Thanks, from niece Audrey Kindred
